Player Equipment Guide

This guide serves as a reference for the required and recommended equipment for all players participating in our in-town soccer program. Proper equipment helps keep players safe, comfortable, and ready to play throughout the season.

Player Equipment Checklist

Before arriving at the field, players should have:

  • Soccer cleats
  • Shin guards
  • Soccer socks
  • Team shirt
  • Athletic shorts or athletic pants
  • Water bottle
  • Goalkeeper gloves (if desired - not usually necessary)
  • Soccer ball (optional)

Proper equipment helps create a safer and better experience for all players, coaches, and referees throughout the season.

Required Safety Equipment

Soccer Cleats

Players must wear soccer cleats for all practices and games.

Please note:

Only soccer cleats are permitted

  • Cleats from other sports such as baseball, football, or lacrosse are not allowed
  • Metal cleats are not permitted

Soccer cleats are specifically designed for safe movement on the field and help reduce the risk of slipping or injury. To better understand the difference between soccer cleats and other cleats, please see our Soccer Cleat Guide.

Shin Guards

Shin guards are required for all players during all practices and games.

We strongly recommend shin guards that include the NOCSAE certification stamp, which indicates they meet the highest available safety standard.

Shin guards should:

  • Fit properly and comfortably
  • Fully protect the front of the shin
  • Be worn underneath soccer socks

For Rugrats ONLY: This may be relaxed depending on comfort and participation level

Required Clothing

Soccer Socks

Players in U6 and older must wear soccer socks that extend to approximately knee height and fully cover the shin guards.

These socks help:

  • Keep shin guards securely in plalce
  • Improve comfort during play
  • Meet safety expectations during games

Team Shirt

Each player will receive an official team shirt for the season. This should be worn for all games and team activities.

In cooler weather, players may a long-sleeve shirt or a sweatshirt under the team shirt

Shorts or Athletic Pants

Players should wear soccer:

  • Soccer shorts or athletic shorts
  • Athletic pants in cooler weather

Please avoid:

  • Jeans
  • Pants with zippers
  • Clothing with hard materials
  • Anything that restricts movement

Goalkeeper Gloves

Goalkeeper gloves are used by all in-town age groups from U6 and up.

We will have shared gloves available for players to use, but players are welcome to bring and use their own gloves if they prefer.

Personal gloves often provide a better fit and greater comfort, especially for players who regularly play goalkeeper.

Jewelry Policy

Per Massachusetts Youth Soccer guidelines, no jewelry of any kind may be worn during practices or games.

This includes:

  • Earrings (including newly pierced ears)
  • Necklaces
  • Bracelets (including permanent bracelets)
  • Rings
  • Watches
  • Fitness trackers

Tape over earrings is not permitted.

This rule applies to all age groups and is strictly for player safety.

Water Bottle

Each player should bring a water bottle to every practice and game.

We strongly recommend labeling the bottle with your child's 

  • Labeling the bottle with your child’s name

Water bottles are frequently misplaced, and labeled bottles are much easier to return.

Optional: Personal Soccer Ball

Players are welcome to bring their own soccer ball for practice.

If purchasing a ball, please use the correct size for your child’s age group:

  • Rugrats - Size 3
  • U6 - Size 3
  • U8 - Size 3
  • U10 - Size 4
  • U12 - SIze 4
  • Juniors - Size 5

Please write your child’s name on the ball if they bring one.

Additional Recommendations

Weather-Appropriate Clothing

Practices and games are often held in cool, windy, or wet conditions.

Please dress players appropriately for the weather while ensuring they can still move comfortably and safely.

Layers are encouraged when needed.

Hair Safety

Players with long hair should have it tied back securely.

Please avoid hard clips, sharp accessories, or anything that could create a safety concern during play.
